Overview

There are a number of books about slide rules, some are lists of various manufacturers, others are instructional and yet others are historical giving details of the development of the slide rule. There are also a number of books which are a mixture of all three of these categories.

Books

Here are some of the slide rule books I have collected:

Calvin C Bishop Slide Rule - How To Use It

This book published by Barnes & Noble has a series of examples, problems and answers for common slide rule types. Some of the problem areas covered include Area, Volume, Trigonometry, Mechanics, Civil Engineering, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering and Thermodynamics.

  • Author: Calvin C. Bishop
  • Publisher: Barnes & Noble
  • Copyright Date: 1947, 1952, 1955
  • Pages: 150
  • Condition: Good
Peter Hopp Slide Rules - Their History, Models and Makers

This is a standard reference work on the history of slide rules. This book is also a current print and is quite readily available, no slide rule collector can survive without this by their side.

  • Author: Peter M. Hopp, C.Eng. MBCS
  • Publisher: Astragal Press
  • Copyright Date: 1999
  • Pages: 310
  • Condition: Excellent
Lee H. Johnson The Slide Rule

Covers a wide range of slide rule problems and how to solve them. Based around resolving engineering problems, this book has plenty of illustrations and descriptions. The illustrations mainly seem to feature K+E rules.

  • Author: Lee H. Johnson
  • Publisher: D. Van Nostrand Company
  • Copyright Date: 1949
  • Pages: 242
  • Condition: Good, slight scuff mark on cover, some annotations
Rufus T Strohm The Slide Rule

Fairly basic text based around coursework for the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Pennsylvania. I believe that there are three versions of this book which were published, two in hard back and one in paper back.

  • Author: Rufus T Strohm and ICS Staff
  • Publisher: International Textbook Company
  • Copyright Date: 1939
  • Pages: 84
  • Condition: Good
ICS Staff The Slide Rule

Fairly basic text based around coursework for the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Pennsylvania. I know of three versions of this book which were published, two in hard back and one in paper back. This example is the later paperback version and was formerly attributed to Rufus T Strohm (see above listing). This later version no longer bears Strohm's name and has an additional section for Circular slide rules.

  • Author: ICS Staff
  • Publisher: International Textbook Company
  • Copyright Date: 1939, 1948
  • Pages: 94
  • Condition: Good
Neville W Young A Basic Slide Rule Manual

This book is a shorter version of another manual written by the author which is titled, "A Complete Slide Rule Manual", and which seems to have been used as a text in some advanced tertiary courses in Australia in the early 1970's. This basic version is a more introductory document but it still covers a good range of operations for Log and Trig.

  • Author: Neville W Young
  • Publisher: West Publishing Corporation
  • Copyright Date: 1973
  • Pages: 86
  • Condition: Good, scuff marks on cover
